Beat

The basic time unit of a piece; metronomic pulse

5

Consistent and steady pulse demonstrated throughout entire performance.
4

Beat is mostly steady. Some speeding up or slowing down may occur, though infrequently.
3

Beat is steady some of the time. Beat becomes inconsistent during more difficult passages, detracting somewhat from overall performance.
2

Beat may be erratic. In many places the beat becomes lost, detracting from the overall recognition of the passage.
1

No steady beat at all. Lack of beat detracts significantly from overall performance, making passage unrecognizable.
Rhythm

Accuracy of values, duration, pulse, steadiness, meter

5

The beat is secure and the rhythms are accurate for the style of music being played. Accents reinforce the meter. Note values are accurate and fall on the correct beat(s).
4

The beat is secure and the rhythms are mostly accurate. There are a few duration errors, but these do not detract from the overall performance.
3

The beat is mostly secure. However, the rhythms become inaccurate in places. There are some isolated problems, but the overall performance is not drastically affected.
2

The beat is somewhat erratic. Some rhythms are accurate, but there are frequent and/or repeated duration errors. Rhythm problems detract from the overall performance.
1

The beat is usually erratic and rhythms are seldom accurate, detracting significantly from the overall performance.
Fingerings

5

The fingerings are consistently followed, and shifting is used to aid in accurate performance of the piece.
4

The fingerings are mostly followed. Some fingerings are missed or ignored, but this does not detract from the overall performance.
3

The fingerings are sometimes followed. Shifting does not occur, but the overall performance is not drastically affected.
2

The following of fingerings is erratic. The player frequently stumbles over the fingerings and shifting, detracting from the overall performance.
1

The fingerings are not followed or are completely ignored. The lack of solid fingerings and shifting detracts significantly from the overall performance.
Intonation

Accuracy of printed pitches and finger placement within the appropriate range

5

Notes/pitches are consistently accurate. Virtually no errors.
4

An occasional, isolated error exists, but the pitch is accurate and secure most of the time.
3

Occasional pitch errors begin to mildly detract from parts of the performance. Overall performance is not drastically affected.
2

Some accurate pitches are heard, but there are frequent and/or repeated errors that detract from the performance.
1

Very few accurate or secure pitches. Pitches that are played are indiscernible.
Bowings

Bow direction in given passage

5

Bowings are consistent and follow, precisely, the markings in the score.
4

Bowings are typically accurate and consistent. One or two missed bowings may occur.
3

Bowings are mostly followed, though some errors are made. Effort is made to correct backward bowings.
2

An attempt at following bowings is made, though multiple bowings are missed or backwards in any given section.
1

Most bowings are not followed. Many are missed, detracting from the performance.
Articulation

Characteristics of the attack, duration, and decay of a given note

5

Secure Attacks; Markings (staccato, legato, slur, accents, etc.) are executed as directed by the score.
4

Attacks are mostly secure, though there might be an isolated error or omission. Markings are executed accurately as directed by the score.
3

Attacks are usually secure. There are a few errors or omissions that affect the accuracy of the overall performance.
2

Attacks are rarely secure, and markings are not executed accurately as directed by the score. The overall performance is affected.
1

Few secure attacks. Markings are typically not executed accurately, if at all.
Tone

Quality of sound, pitch, and vibration

5

Tone is consistently focused, clear, and centered throughout the range of the instrument. Tone has professional quality.
4

Tone is focused, clear and centered through the normal playing range of the instrument. Extremes in range sometimes cause tone to be less controlled. Tone quality typically does not detract from the performance.
3

Tone is often focused, clear and centered, but sometimes the tone is uncontrolled in the normal playing range. Extremes in range are usually uncontrolled. Occasionally the tone quality detracts from overall performance.
2

The tone is inconsistently focused, and mostly uncontrolled (scratchy or airy). The unfocused tone quality detracts from the overall performance.
1

The tone is often not focused, clear or centered regardless of the range being played, significantly detracting from the overall performance.
Dynamics

Volume of sound; the loudness or softness of a passage

5

Dynamic levels are obvious, consistent, and are an accurate interpretation of the style of music being played.
4

Dynamic levels are typically accurate and consistent. Some subtleties are ignored.
3

Extremes of dynamics are followed (forte and piano), but subtleties cannot be discerned (crescendo and descrescendo)
2

Dynamics are not initially followed, but some, minimal, effort is made toward dynamic contrast.
1

Attention to dynamic levels is not obvious.
