Watercolor Landscape
Students will create a landscape using various techniques to create textures for the different landscape elements. The landscape should display three distinct grounds: Background, Middle Ground, and Foreground.

Techniques

Student used various painting techniques to create details and textures of the landscape scene and problem solved to select the best techniques/mark making for each part of the landscape.
Advanced

Excellent use of painting techniques. Strong evidence of problem solving to find the best technique and mark making for each part of the landscape. Excellent care was taken to control the paint and brushes resulting in a very neat artwork overall.
Proficient

Good use of painting techniques. Evidence of problem solving can be seen in most areas of the landscape. Mark making is evident for texture. Good control over paint and brushes in most of the painting.
Developing

A couple different techniques were used, but not much problem solving can be seen. Limited if any mark making techniques applied for texture. Acceptable control of paint and brushes but loss of brush/paint control is evident.
Not Proficient

Hard to distinguish techniques used throughout the painting and no problem solving to create details and textures can be seen. Not much care was taken when painting and messy areas make it difficult to identify the landscape scene.

Student used knowledge of color mixing to create colors and various values for layering.

Some knowledge of color mixing can be seen in parts of the landscape but not all. Watercolor was not mixed and or not translucent. Limited layering.

Use of color theory is not evident in the painting. Watercolor was not mixed and paint appears more opaque. No layering.

Student used textures, patterns, highlights and shadows where necessary to make landscape seem realistic and identifiable.

Excellent textures, patterns, highlights and shadows throughout entire painting make landscape seem realistic and identifiable.

Student used textures, patterns, highlights and shadows in most areas of the painting to make landscape seem realistic and identifiable.

Student used very few textures, patterns, highlights and shadows where necessary to make landscape seem realistic and identifiable.
