3D paper Masks

This lesson's goal is to make a 3-dimensional mask using paper sculpture and/or cardboard relief design techniques. Students creatively express an authentic looking tribal mask demonstrating their understanding of the elements and principles of art.

Durability/Construction	Wow Factor The mask was a 3-dimensional sculpture using cardboard and paper sculpture techniques to express an authentic looking Tribal Mask.	Almost There Most of the mask is sturdy, but when displaying it, there are a couple of pieces that might need extra care.	No Way Man! The mask is flimsy and falls apart easily. It may not last for display.
Creativity	Wow Factor Totally original design and elements. Mask successfully uses symmetry, balance, pattern and unity. Color, composition, and decorative details enhance the mask.	Almost There Most of the mask elements are unique, however, a few may have been copied. The mask has some resemblance to an authentic Tribal Mask.	No Way Man! The mask has few or no unique elements. The mask does not resemble those possibly found in the different cultures we looked at.
Structure	Wow Factor Students successfully employed 3 or more layers on their mask to represent the 3-dimensional quality.	Almost There Students used 1-2 layers on their mask and most seem to represent the art of Africa.	No Way Man! Students used no layers or 3-d quality on their mask.
Artistic Behaviour	Wow Factor Class time was well used & you were helpful to those around you	Almost There Class time was used well, for the most part, but were not helpful to those around you	No Way Man! Class time was poorly used and you were at times not helpful to those around you.
Artist Statement	Wow Factor Excellent explanation of choice of Spirit Animal. Personal Connections were made.
