Class Attendance and Participation

Below is a chart that shows you exactly how your class participation grade will be developed. All students are expected to participate in class! Students should understand that their participation mark begins at 0 and then is built up through active participation.

PUNCTUALITY AND ATTENDANCE Attendance/Punctuality	Excellent Student is always on time. Student is absent 0-1 times and proactively seeks missed material, reading and assignments.	Good Student is late to class once. Student is absent 2 times and proactively seeks missed material, reading and assignments.	Fair Student is late to class twice. Student is absent 3 times and/or rarely seeks missed material, reading and/or assignments.	Poor Student is late to class three or more times. Student is absent 4 or more times and/or does not seek missed material, reading and/or assignments.
ENGAGEMENT Student is an active participant in every class session.	Excellent Student asks appropriate questions and/or contributes to the class discussion every week.	Good Student asks appropriate questions and/or contributes to the class discussion almost every week.	Fair Student asks an appropriate question and/or contributes to the class discussion once in a while	Poor Student does not ask an appropriate question and/or contribute to the class discussion.
GROUP INVOLVEMENT Student is a full participant in group activities.	Excellent Student promptly forms group and takes a leadership role in dyad and group activities.	Good Student promptly forms group and takes an active role in dyad and group activities.	Fair Student reluctantly joins group and/or minimally participates in dyad and group activities.	Poor Student does not fully join group in a timely manner and/or does not fully participate in dyad and group activities.
DISTRACTIONS Does not distract others, does not display cell phone or other materials in class.	Excellent Student does not view cell phone or other materials that are not used in the class.	Good Student displays cell phone or other materials that are not used in the class once.	Fair Student displays cell phone or other materials that are not used in the class twice.	Poor Student displays cell phone or other materials that are not used in the class three or more times/ asked to leave the class.
ATTENTION Student is alert and attentive in class.	Excellent Student pays close attention to class as demonstrated by ability to answer questions and engage in discussion.	Good Student usually pays attention to class as demonstrated by answering question when asked, eyes always open.	Fair Student appears to be asleep during class once as demonstrated by eyes closed, cannot answer question when asked.	Poor Student appears to be asleep during class more than once, cannot answer question when asked, head on desk and/or eyes closed.
