	Poor 1 pts	Fair 2 pts	Good 3 pts	Excellent 4 pts
Answers Questions	Poor Only responds when called upon directly.	Fair Raises hand, but answers question in minimalist terms.	Good Responds with enthusiasm and some specificity.	Excellent Responds with enthusiasm, supports answer with textual or real life examples.
Asks Questions	Poor Never asks questions.	Fair Asks questions that indicate that he/she has not been paying attention in class earlier the same day.	Good Asks pertinent questions that help student and class receive clarification.	Excellent Asks questions that open up new areas of inquiry or redirect the conversation in interesting and purposeful ways.
Creates Connections With Class	Poor Student only speaks to students proximal to them.	Fair Students makes thoughtful connections directed at the instructor, but overheard by other students.	Good Student asks questions of peers or makes connections to other comments in group discussions.	Excellent Student makes connections to or responds to comments made in large group discussions that frame the conversations and widen terms or specify the angle of inquiry in fruitful ways.
Public Speaking Skills	Poor Student speaks in public, but has little inflection, speaks rapidly and/ or avoids eye contact	Fair Student speaks comfortably in front of the class, but does not show awareness of his or her audience.	Good Student speaks ably, with appropriate inflections, volume and eye contact.	Excellent Student focuses the discussion through authoritative style, interesting rhetorical devices, comfortable bearing, and an awareness of the audience's attention.
Effort	Poor Student is growing in the area of class participation.	Fair Student is meeting at least 1 of their participation goals.	Good Student is meeting at least 2 of their participation goals.	Excellent Student is meeting all three of their participation goals.
