Sorting 
Students will be presented with a variety of objects and asked to sort them into groups. Students can decide how to sort them. Students will first perform activity in pairs and then again alone (may occur on separate days)

Sorts logically by one attribute, with a partner

Beginning

Child starts to group by an apparent attribute (ie: color), but either:
-does not complete sorting, or
-does not successfully finish grouping objects according to their apparent original attribute.
Developing

Child sorts
-most objects by color, or
-most objects into other visually logical groups such as by shape
Accomplished

Child sorts:
-all objects correctly into groups by color or shape, or
-most objects by a logical and more challenging attribute, such as texture.
Advanced

Child sorts all objects correctly by an attribute other than color or geometric shape.
Explains categories

Beginning

Child attempts to explain verbally or nonverbally, but is mostly unsuccessful.
Developing

Child attempts to explain, but perhaps by only using one word or gesture. With teacher prompting, child is able to extend explanation somewhat.
Accomplished

Child explains their categories clearly using words and or gestures.
Advanced

Child explains categories clearly and adds details about their thought process during their sorting.
