Art & Design students should be able to successfully critique their own artwork and that of others using terminology that is understandable and relevant to students in the field of art, photography, and design.

Critique of a Work of Art

Description	Two Thumbs Up Makes a complete and detailed description of the subject matter and/or elements seen in a work.	Thumbs Up Makes a detailed description of most of the subject matter and/or elements seen in a work.	So So Makes a detailed description of some of the subject matter and/or elements seen in a work.	Thumbs Down Descriptions are not detailed or complete.
Analysis	Two Thumbs Up Student demonstrated understanding of design elements through the use of correct art terminology and was able to clearly describe, discuss, and interpret artwork.	Thumbs Up The student demonstrated some awareness of basic design elements and was able to describe, discuss, and interpret artwork.	So So The student demonstrated satisfactory awareness of the design elements and briefly described, discussed, and interpreted artwork.	Thumbs Down The student demonstrated very little awareness of basic design elements and made no effort to describe, discuss, and interpret artwork.
Interpretation	Two Thumbs Up Forms a somewhat reasonable hypothesis about the symbolic or metaphorical meaning and is able to support this with evidence from the work.	Thumbs Up Student identifies the literal meaning of the work.	So So Student can relate how the work makes him/her feel personally.	Thumbs Down Student finds it difficult to interpret the meaning of the work.
Evaluation	Two Thumbs Up Uses multiple criteria to judge the artwork, such as composition, expression, creativity, design, communication of ideas.	Thumbs Up Uses 1-2 criteria to judge the artwork	So So Tries to use aesthetic criteria to judge artwork, but does not apply the criteria accurately.	Thumbs Down Evaluates work as good or bad based on personal taste.
