Modern American Gothic/Prismacolor composition 
Value Composition. The composition demonstrates the students ability to create the Illusion of volume or form using the element of Art: Value and the principle of composition. Value is added to the contour drawing using one or more of the following methods: tonal, stippling, and prisma color shading. Composition shows at least 3-4 values of shading and includes the 5 Principles of Shading: highlight, shade, shadow, reflected light and backshading.

Composition fills the paper. It is interesting and planned carefully. All objects have a clear sense of volume illuminated from one light source.
PROFICIENT

Composition fills most of the paper.
Composition is interesting and adequately planned.
Most of the objects have a clear sense of volume.
BELOW AVERAGE

Composition fills 50% or less of the paper.
Composition is not well planned and ojects are not logically placed. Some (at least half of) objects have a clear sense of volume.
IN-PROGRESS

No clear thought to composition- appears to be a sketch or study
Composition fills less than 50% of the paper. No sense of volume.
Technique

Student demonstrates that instructions and concepts are understood

EXCEEDS

Clearly and consistently shows varying values from one light source.
Consistently shows 5 or more different values of shading. Includes all 5 principles of shading: highlight, shade, reflected light and backshading.
PROFICIENT

Tries to show varying values from one light source. Shows 3-4 values of shading. Missing some areas of value. Composition shows highlight, shade and at least one other principle of shading.
BELOW AVERAGE

Shows little range of values (1-3). An obvious light source is not evident.
Much of the drawing has no shading on it.
Much of the drawing is smeared together, making it all one value.
IN-PROGRESS

Little to no shading is apparent.
Shows contour and cross-contour lines.
Composition is more about Line and not Value.
Creativity & Craftsmanship

Students inventiveness, expression of ideas, and imagination. Students attention to detail, neatness, precision and care

EXCEEDS

Great pride and care has been taken by the student to present a neat, unmarred final composition.
PROFICIENT

Composition shows some lack of care- slightly crumpled, unwanted marks or smudges.
BELOW AVERAGE

Composition shows greater lack of care- multiple creases or crumpled, smudges, etc.
IN-PROGRESS

Composition shows signs of neglect that demonstrate the student's lack of pride in the work.
Effort

Student manages his/her time in order to finish the project by the assigned due date.

EXCEEDS

The student put forth the effort required to complete the project well;used class time to the fullest.
PROFICIENT

The student put forth the effort required to finish the project; used class time adequately
BELOW AVERAGE

The student did not put forth enough effort required to finish the project, used class time adequately.
IN-PROGRESS

The student put forth no effort and the project was not completed; class time was not used well.
