Introduction
Poor
Student does not greet other student unless prompted. No appearance of attentiveness or interest in the conversation. Introductory information is extremely basic.
Fair
Student greets other student, with little interest in the conversation. Introductory information is somewhat basic, strictly memorized greetings.
Excellent
Student greets other student, appearing attentive and maintaining eye contact. Proper intonation and inflection are used. Introductory information is creative; not memorized.
Asks Questions
Poor
Student does not ask questions. Must be prompted or encouraged by other student to ask questions.
Fair
Student uses three questions mentioned in introduction to interpersonal task. Responses sound constructed previously.
Excellent
Student uses one to two questions mentioned in the introduction and creates one to two questions of their own relevant to the topic. Originality and creativity are evident.
Answers Questions
Poor
Student answers with short replies and fixed sentences. No room to transition or create with the language.
Fair
Student uses some complex responses. Vocabulary and grammar are fixed and derive strictly from the unit. Some creativity is possible.
Excellent
Student uses complex responses, with various sentence lengths as appropriate, and various vocabulary and grammar constructions. Much creativity is evident.
Ease of Conversation
Poor
Many pauses and awkward beats. Conversation appears difficult. More questions are answered than are asked.
Fair
Some pauses in conversation; appears forced and unnatural but continues. Even balance between asking and answering.
Excellent
Conversation is continuous, with equal parts asking and answering. Very few to no pauses in conversation. Appears natural and enjoyable.
Negotiation of Meaning
Poor
Student does not assist other student in negotiation of meaning. Resorts strictly to English when unable to think of a word.
Fair
Student negotiates meaning with some difficulty. False cognates are used. Student assists other student in negotiating meaning.
Excellent
Student is adept at negotiation of meaning, through gestures, intonation, facial expressions, and circumventing of certain words. Assists other student in the process.
