Third grade students are to explore the possibilities of design, then search for nature for their materials, alter their materials, create a composition and critique based on similarities and differences of peers and to Robert Smithson.

Manipulation of Letter -Design ST 7-10 (7)	Poor Little variation to an upper or lower case initial.	Good Use the letter to create an optical design, but also a representation of the student.	Exceptional Strong and diverse variation in all parts of the letter. Choose a more challenging initial with greater artistic response.
Manipulation of Materials ST 7-10 (9)	Poor Similar materials are gathered. Used as they are, little cutting or integration.	Good New natural materials are explored. Start to integrate and combine materials.	Exceptional New and known materials are combined and integrated, altered and added to create a new visual interest.
Creation of Composition ST 7-10 (8, 9, 10)	Poor a. Not all space is covered. Cardboard background still exposed. Few materials combined to form letter. b. Too many materials are used and letter design is lost.	Good Balance between new materials and creating the initial. Materials, textures, and colors work to create an interesting composition.	Exceptional Strong integration of materials and the design. Not overdone to make look forced. Easy to understand and balance of materials throughout composition.
