Eye Contact

Enter description

Level 1

Student read their speech and never looks at the audience or hides behind their speech.
Level 2

Student looks up from their speech a few times, generally making contact with only one area of the room.
Level 3

The student makes eye contact with all sides of the room and looks up repeatedly.
Level 4

The student uses eye contact to communicate a clearer message by looking at audience members directly to highlight a point.
Voice volume and clarity

The speaker seems unprepared and unpracticed because he or she stumbles over many words, cannot read the words, or has a conversation with her/himself in front of the class.

The student makes pronunciation errors or becomes befuddled at one point. May use words like "um" or "like."
Level 3

While the student may stumble, she/he continues on in a professional manner.
Level 4

Due to practice and familiarity with the speech, the speaker makes only the smallest of errors like an uneccesary hesitation.
Body Language

Level 1

The speaker's gestures are distracting. The speaker looks depressed or apathetic.
Level 2

The speaker's appearance may lack formality because he or she is fidgeting, not standing up straight, or seems insecure.
Level 3

The speaker's appearance is professional in dress, stance, and gestures.
Level 4

The speaker's appearance is professional in dress, stance, and gestures. The student uses their body to emphasize points or add meaning.
Voice Intonation

Level 1

The speech is delivered in a monotone or apathetic voice.
Level 2

The speaker sounds uninterested in what she/he is presenting.
Level 3

The speech is delivered with enthusiasm.
Level 4

The speech is delivered with enthusiasm and the speaker uses intonation in order to emphasize points and add meaning.
Content/Organization

Level 1

The speaker has a limited understanding of their topic. They do not seem to be interested, or cannot convey their interest to the audience. The speech is not well organized, or seems like a list of facts.
Level 2

The speaker has some understanding of their topic. They made their topic interesting for the audience. The speech is organized at some parts, but loses focus.
Level 3

The speaker has a good understanding of their topic. Their interest in the subject has made it accessible for the audience. The speech is well organized enough that the audience can follow along and learn.
Level 4

The speaker has a thorough understanding of their topic. Their passion for, and interest in the subject are clear to the audience. The speech is very well organized, with easy to follow information.
