	Emerging 1 pts	Competent 2 pts	Proficient 3 pts
1. Tone Quality	Emerging Tone is thin or too loud, with possible overblowing, cracking, or squeaking	Competent Tone is adequate, with little overblowing, cracking, or squeaking.	Proficient Tone is open, full and clear, but not forced. No notes cracking.
2. Articulation	Emerging Has a hard time using connected or separated styles of articulation in performance, may puff cheeks, or shake body to create note repetition.	Competent Mostly uses connected or separated styles of articulation in performance.	Proficient Consistently uses connected or separated styles of articulation in performance.
3. Phrasing	Emerging Choppy phrases, Breathes after each note	Competent Breathes more than necessary, but in logical intervals	Proficient Phrases are complete, with breaths between phrases
4. Hand Position	Emerging Hand and/or fingers may be misplaced, off holes or on incorrect holes, may be unfamiliar with note fingerings	Competent Correct left and right hand position on instrument. May have a misplaced finger or a wrong fingering	Proficient Correct left and right hand position on instrument. Fingers curved over valves, keys, or holes in a ready position, all fingerings performed correctly
