My rubric

This rubric is a summative assessment of a beginning number sense unit in a Kindergarten classroom. It focuses on students' understanding, representation, and communication of solving number stories. Given a story problem, the student will choose the appropriate process, use manipulatives to illustrate reasoning, and explain the solution using math language.

Understanding	Below Student does not understand the problem.	Developing Student identifies quantities given but chosen strategy may or may not be correct.	Secure Student identifies quantities given and uses correct strategy to solve the problem.
Representation	Below Student is unsure of numbers involved and does not attempt to use manipulatives.	Developing Student attempts to use manipulatives to represent thinking, but reasoning is unclear or shows minor error.	Secure Student uses manipulatives to correctly represent thinking and communicate reasoning.
Communication	Below Student cannot explain what they did. Solution is inaccurate and/or unclear.	Developing Student clearly explains solution with some appropriate math language.	Secure Student clearly explains solution and uses appropriate math language.
Number Writing	Below Student cannot write more than 3 numbers given.	Developing Student can write more than 4 numbers given.	Secure Student can write all numbers given plus more.
