Self Critique

Very Easy

Music was extremely easy and I could sightread perfectly the first time I looked at the piece.
Easy

Music was easy and I could sing along with the teacher with minimal mistakes. The second time I sang it, I got it right.
Moderate

The teacher modeled, sang the song first, and I was able to repeat. When the teacher was not singing along with me, I made minimal mistakes.
Challenging

I needed to hear the teacher sing the song a few times before I understood what to sing. The written music is hard to follow and I was not sure where to to look for my vocal line.
Difficult

The teacher still has to sing the song along with me. There are many reapeats and I am not sure how to follow the music. I do not know at all where my vocal line goes next.

Notes

Correct pitches, singing in unison or harmony when called for, correct rhythmic duration

Many Mistakes

I did not sing on pitch with my vocal part. I was singing the wrong notes throughout most of the song and not singing rhythms correctly.
Some Mistakes

I made some mistakes but I could find my way back by listening to my partner or the person next to me. When the teacher sang my part I could get back on track but would usually make another mistake if the teacher was not singing.
Mostly Accurate

I made a few mistakes but could find my note when the teacher played my part on the piano. Most of my rhythms were accurate but if I made a mistake I knew where and why and how to fix it next time.
Very Accurate

I can sing my part with almost no mistakes while the teacher plays the piano accompaniment and not my vocal line.
Nearly Perfect

I have no mistakes. I am singing on pitch at all times and with correct note and rest values. I need no prompts, from the teacher, to change my pitch or rhythm.
Breath Control

Correct breath marks, breathing in the breath marks, supporting breath through the end of the phrase

Many Mistakes

I could only sing 2 or three notes before taking a breath. I never breathed in the correctly marked spots.
Some Mistakes

I rarely took a breath in the correct spot. I felt out of breath before the musical phrase was over.
Mostly Accurate

I occasionally took a breath before the end of the phrase. I was able to sing to the end of most musical phrases without feeling out of breath.
Very Accurate

I am breathing and supporting my vocal line through the end of the phrase almost every time. When I need to take a breath I breath where the other voices in my part will not so that it still sounds like the ensemble is breathing together.
Nearly Perfect

I am demonstrating proper breath support at all times and I am able to sing throughout the musical phrase with a supported sound.
Expression

Correct dynamics, correct style, tone and color

Many Mistakes

My expression is poor. I am just singing the notes and not looking at the dynamic markings or following the conductors cues. My vocal tone does not blend with the ensemble at all.
Some Mistakes

My expression is fair. I change my dynamic if the teacher reminds me to. I focus on blending and pure vowel sounds when the teacher tells me I am not blending or using correct vowel sounds.
Mostly Accurate

My expression is good. I can anticipate a change in dynamics before the teacher reminds or prompts me, however I am not sure how to make my voice louder or softer. I am blending and using correct vowel sounds some of the time.
Very Accurate

I am expressive. I know how to change the volume of my voice during the music, but still need some prompts from the teacher. Most of my vowel sounds are pure and I blend well with the rest of the ensemble.
Nearly Perfect

I am very expressive. I follow all dynamic markings in the music and cues from the conductor/teacher. All of my vowel sounds are pure and I am blending at all times.
