Application of Phonics

Student struggles to identify individual phonemes when sounding out words with simple CVC words.
Requires Support

Student is able to identify the phoneme but needs some help when blending it together. Struggles with CCV but is rather confident with CVC.
Working Towards

Student can identify some simple graphemes and is showing an ability to blend with CCV words to decode words.
Working Within

Student is able to use a range of tools to sound out new words: segmenting; blending all new CCV, CVC and VC words with a good degree of accuracy.
Working Above

Student identifies and uses a whole range of phonics tools to decode word and shows a good understanding of their relationships with one another.

Student has a very limited vocabulary that extends only to simple CVC words.

Student is able to use CVC and some CCV words effectively in their writing and is starting to show a growing understanding of academic language; however, needs support for clarification.

Student shows understanding of relevant academic language; however, shows some difficulties in understanding how to use them effectively.
Working Within

Student is able to use new academic language effectively in text with minimal support for understanding.
Working Above

Student can generate own relevant academic language from their own reading.

Students writing is illegible, no finger space and shows no understanding that letters go on lines.
Requires Support

Student shows an understanding that letters go on lines and writing is becoming more legible. Student still does not use finger spaces.

Student is beginning to use finger spaces and write on the lines.

Students writing is legible, uses finger spaces and is on the lines.
Working Above

Student has neat legible handwriting and is beginning to use cursive joins.

Student spells 0-30% of their high frequency words and uses them correctly.

Student spells 30-60% of their high frequency words and uses them correctly.
