Participial Phrases	Poor Student did not use participial phrases or the ones used were poorly constructed.	Fair Student used one or two participial phrases that were adequate but need improvement in grammar or style and added some information to the sentence.	Good Student used two or more participial phrases that were properly constructed and added detailed information to the sentence.
Topic Sentence	Poor Student did not provide a topic sentence.	Fair Student used a topic sentence, but it was more of a statement of fact than an overview of the paragraph.	Good Student used a topic sentence that provided a complete and understandable overview of the paragraph.
Explanation	Poor Student provided little or no detailed information about the topic of the paragraph.	Fair Student provided adequate information, but some important details were missing.	Good Student provided the essential information necessary to prove the topic sentence.
Concluding Sentence	Poor Student did not include a concluding sentence.	Fair Student provided a topic sentence, showing some relevance for the paragraph.	Good Student provided a concluding sentence that explained the relevance and/or importance of the details discussed in the paragraph.
