Hands

Correct fulcrum construction. Relaxed soft hands that allow for fluidity in playing.

Level IV

Playing position is correct and hand & finger position are correct to allow for good technical facility.
Level III

Hand and finger position are good but the grip is too tight or loose for good stick/mallet control.
Level II

Playing position is good but there are minor errors in hand or finger position.
Level I

Some effort is being made to hold the sticks correctly but performance is hindered because finger position is incorrect or
sticks are not held at the balance point.
Feet

Feet allow for full sound. Heel-up or heel down techniques used.

Level IV

The playing motion is correct, allowing for good control of the bass drum pedal. Nice full sounds.
Level III

There are some faults in the pattern or direction of the bass drum foot. Some inconsistencies in sound quality.
Level II

The playing motion is generally correct with only minor errors.
Level I

Bass drum foot has several inconsistences, resulting in a poor quality sound.
Rhythm

Rhythms are accurately counted with a steady beat.

Level IV

Steady pulse with accurate rhythms
Level III

Pulse is fairly steady but there are frequent or repeated small rhythmic errors.
Level II

Steady pulse with few rhythmic errors
Level I

Pulse is unstable with major rhythmic errors.
Groove

The nature of the groove is solid. Any deviations from the groove are in time and do not disrupt the groove in any way.

Level IV

The student demonstrates the ability to maintain a steady groove.
Level III

The student demonstrates an understanding of keeping a steady groove, with some faults.
Level II

The student demonstrates inconsistent use or performance of the groove with some attempts to correct mistakes.
Level I

The student demonstrates little understanding of keeping a consistent groove.
