Main Idea and Supporting Details

Students will create a graphic organizer to demonstrate knowledge of main idea and detail while using an expository text of "The Life and Times of an Ant". The main idea and details will be the focus of the graphic organizer and the supporting details will be evidence. The student will include at least five supporting details. Illustrations will be added to the graphic organizer and must connect to the main idea as well.

Main Idea	Poor The main idea is not identified either through a verbal explanation, picture, or writing.	Fair The main idea is partially identified either through a verbal explanation, picture, or writing.	Good The main idea is a complete thought and is easy to identify.
Supporting Details	Poor The graphic organizer has 1 supporting detail either told verbally, in picture, or written response that supports the main idea.	Fair The graphic organizer has 2 supporting details either told verbally, in picture, or written response that supports the main idea.	Good The graphic organizer has 3 supporting details either told verbally, in picture, or written response that supports the main idea.
Illustrations	Poor The illustrations lack detail, are messy or seem to have nothing to do with the evidence provided by the supporting detail. The student only used one color or scribbled without effort when drawing on the graphic organizer .	Fair The drawings illustrate the supporting details but may be messy, making the graphic organizer look rushed or cluttered.	Good Each drawing goes with a supporting detail, and clearly supports the main idea. The drawings are planned, making the graphic organizer stronger. The drawings are neatly applied with attention to detail.
Effort	Poor Does not attempt to initiate assignments and participate. Needs constant help or redirection.	Fair Attempts to initiate assignment and participate with assistance.	Good Initiates assignment independently and participates, may need slight help.
