Proper technique	Novice Correct technique is rarely used. Hits the drum with a little too much or not enough force. Incorrect technique greatly distracts from the quality of performance.	Learner Correct technique is sometimes used. Hits the drum with a little too much or not enough force. Incorrect technique distracts from the quality of performance.	Practitioner Correct technique is usually used. Hits the drum with a little too much or not enough force. Incorrect technique does not distract from the quality of performance.	Experrt Correct technique is used. Hits the drum with only enough force to make a pleasing, clear sound.
Participation	Novice Student is rarely focused and attentive throughout class. Sometimes disruptive to the rest of the class.	Learner Student is sometimes focused and attentive throughout class, but is easily distracted by others and sometimes distracts others.	Practitioner Student is usually focused and attentive throughout class, but sometimes is distracted by others.
