Desolation STEM 
Students are miners trapped on a base located at the South Pole on the moon. Due to a global war there is no way a resupply ship will make it to the base any time soon and several key life support systems are malfunctioning. Student must think outside the box to repair or re-purpose these systems or else face the possibility of death.

The team failed to function as a cohesive unit. Communication was minimal or non- existent exacerbating the problem.
Fair/ 1 week life extension

The team failed to communicate, however two or three members worked cohesively enough to function. Part of the problem were solved.
Good/ partial success 1 month repri

The team worked well together and accomplished most of what was needed with minimal distractions. At least 80% of the project was completed extending their survival time.
Excellent/ problem solved

The team functioned as a cohesive unit and creative tension was present but not detrimental to the design process. Teams accomplished 95-100% of the project goals and insured their survival.
Creativity and constraint

Poor/ Scenario unsurvivable

Teams did not exhibit creativity and instead sought out what other groups were doing utilizing their time to copy instead of designing. Students strayed outside the project constraints. (Attempted to use more resources or fudged their data to make the project work.
Fair/ 1 week life extension

Students proposed a partially creative design and strayed outside the constraints infrequently
Good/ partial success 1 month repri

Students did not stray from the constraints of the project. Partial success using a combination of creativity and teacher suggestions
Excellent/ problem solved

Students produced a creative solution showing that as a team they could work outside the box while staying within the constraints provided.
Module successful

Poor/ Scenario unsurvivable

Students did not complete the module and could not get their systems back online resulting in a moon base shutdown. Death
Fair/ 1 week life extension

Students were somewhat successful in completing the module. At least one system was brought online giving them a one week reprieve to solve the remaining problems.
Good/ partial success 1 month repri

Students managed to creatively bring at least three modules online granting them a one month extension in order to survive.
Excellent/ problem solved

Students successfully repaired all 4 critical systems and averted a base wide crisis. BONUS: The radio now works.
