Anchor Image

Excellent

Image is large and dominates paper. Is unique, thoughtful, bright, con-conformist. Use of color and materials demonstrate insight, thought and planning. Has that "aah-hah!" factor.
Good

Image is large. Materials used support importance of image to theme and novel but not as high as a score of "4". Begins to develop an aah-hah factor.
Fair

Unremarkable Anchor image does not predominate or is too small to anchor the graphic essay. May be slightly incomplete--demonstrates need for additional time and materials.
Poor

Lacks an anchor image. Anchor image is too small to command the attention of the viewer. Image does not connect thematically with the text or the image is poorly or hastily executed. Large poster or size equated with quality. Demonstrates need for time and additional materials/effort.
Quotes

Excellent

Quotes are neatly displayed inside, around anchor image. Quotes relate to themes that are displayed on anchor image. At least two themes are clearly displayed on Graphic Essay. Quotes span the novel and are insightful and engaging and may come from more than one source.
Good

Quotes thematically relate to the text and are neatly arranged in or around the anchor image.
Fair

Missing quotes or quotes do not command the attention or connect to the identified themes or most evident themes.
Poor

Fewer than 12-15 quotes. Quotes written in pencil or ink (as opposed to markers or crayons)
Aesthetics

Excellent

Project looks great. The selections of colors and materials and anchor image choice support the text and its themes uniquely and creatively. Project may be three dimensional. Time and effort (at least several days) is clearly apparent in this project. Materials are new, well packaged and joined. Demonstrates textual engagement.
Good

Project looks good! Colors and materials generally suport the anchor image and theme, although attention to detail may be lacking. Demonstrates good textual engagement.
Fair

Project looks rushed or hastily assembled. Lacks brainstorming and planning. Elements may be too small to see or grab the viewers attention.
Poor

Does not look like a graphic essay. Elements may be too small to be visible or understand their importance. Equal weight given to too many items.
Commentary

Excellent

Thoughtful quotes connect to identified themes or conflicts. There are at least 9-12, pending assignment directions, quotes. Commentary connects quotes, conflicts/themes and images.
Insightful! Uses character traits and academic vocabulary to demonstrate what quotes reveal about conflict and theme.
Good

Good. 9-12 quotes. Some quotes may focus heavily on one part of the text over the other. Good analysis of quotes in terms of relating to themes and conflict. Connects quotes to conflict and theme.
Fair

Fair. May be missing the needed quotes. Quotes and commentary may be incomplete or disjointed.
Poor

No commentary or incomplete commentary turned in.
