Patterning - Gr. 2
Students will identify and describe, through investigation, growing patterns and shrinking patterns generated by the repeated addition or subtraction on a number line and on a hundreds chart; identify, describe, and create, through investigation, growing patterns and shrinking patterns involving addition and subtraction; represent a given growing or shrinking pattern in a variety of ways; create growing or shrinking patterns; create a repeating pattern by combining two attributes.

Knowledge and Understanding

Student demonstrates an understanding of various concepts relating to growing, shrinking, and repeating patterns; including describing, extending, and creating.

Level 1

With guidance, demonstrates limited understanding of concepts relating to various kinds of patterns.
Level 2

Demonstrates some understanding of repeating, growing, and shrinking patterns and their concepts.
Level 3

Usually demonstrates a considerable understanding of patterns and related concepts.
Level 4

Consistently and using appropriate strategies demonstrates an understanding of repeating, growing, and shrinking patterns and their various components; including describing, extending, and creating.
Thinking

Student uses critical thought processes in order to devise patterns, and shows an understanding that patterns can be represented in different ways, using different attributes.

Level 1

Student has limited success using simple strategies to design patterns. Shows little understanding of pattern representation and use of different attributes.
Level 2

Student has some success using some appropriate strategies to design patterns. Shows limited understanding of pattern representation and use of different attributes.
Level 3

Student has considerable success devising patterns by using appropriate strategies. Shows understanding of pattern representation and use of different attributes.
Level 4

Student has great success devising patterns by using appropriate and creative strategies. Shows clear understanding of pattern representation and use of different attributes.
Communication

Student can clearly and accurately describe patterns and pattern components using appropriate mathematical vocabulary (i.e. pattern, repeat, rule, core, term). Student can do this in a number of different ways (written, oral, visual).

Level 1

Student is unable to clearly describe patterns and components.
Level 2

With prompting, student is able to describe patterns and components with some clarity. Student can do this in one or more ways (written, oral, visual).
Level 3

Clearly describes patterns and components using some appropriate mathematical vocabulary. Student can do this in various different ways (written, oral, visual).
Level 4

Student clearly and confidently describes patterns in various contexts, using appropriate mathematical vocabulary. Student does this using different methods (written, oral, visual).
Application

Student can accurately identify, describe, extend, and create: patterns, pattern rules, growing and shrinking patterns.

Level 1

With limited effectiveness the student identifies, describes, extends, and creates patterns, pattern rules, and growing and shrinking patterns.
Level 2

With some effectiveness the student identifies, describes, extends, and creates patterns, pattern rules, and growing and shrinking patterns.
Level 3

With considerable effectiveness the student identifies, describes, extends, and creates patterns, pattern rules, and growing and shrinking patterns.
Level 4

Student accurately and highly effectively identifies, describes, extends, and creates patterns, pattern rules, and growing and shrinking patterns.
