Student was not able to explain how they received the total amount of balls. Student was not able to explain how they used symbols in their equations to represent an unknown number

Example: My answer is 11.

Student was able to explain how they received the total amount of tennis balls however, they did not explain how they use symbols in their equation to represent an unknown number and vice versa.


Example: In order to find the amount of tennis balls, I added the total amount of soccer and basketballs to see how many balls there are in total so far. Then I subtracted 46 by that number to receive the number of tennis balls which is 11.

Student was able to explain how they received the total amount of balls and explain how they used symbols in their equations to represent an unknown number.

Example: In order to find the amount of tennis balls, I added the total amount of soccer and basketballs to see how many balls there are in total so far which was 35. The equation that I cam up with was 35 + ? = 46. Then I subtracted 46 by 35 to receive the number of tennis balls which is 11.
