Planned carefully. Made several sketches, and showed an awareness of the elements and principles of design. Incorporated geometric hex techniques. Creative use of tools. Chose color scheme carefully; used space effectively.
Above average

Artwork shows that the student applied the principles of design while using one or more elements effectively. Proper use of tools. The space is filled adequately.
Average

Student did the assignment satisfactorily, yet shows lack of planning and little evidence that an overall composition was planned. Attempt to use tools.
Below average

Assignment was completed and turned in, but showed little evidence of any understanding of the elements and principles of art. There is no evidence of planning. Did not use proper tools.
Poor

Student did the minimum or the artwork was never completed.
Creativity/ Originality

Student explored several choices before selecting one. Generated many ideas, tried unusual combinations or changes on several ideas; made connections to previous knowledge. Incorporated symbols to create a personalized piece.
Above average

Student tried a few ideas before selecting one, or based his/her work solely on presented examples. Made attempt to personalize work with symbols.
Average

Student tried one idea and carried it out adequately, but lacked originality. Symbols are unrecognizable or distracting.
Below average

Student fulfilled the assignment, but gave no evidence of trying anything unusual.

Student showed no evidence of original thought.
Media Use/Paint Application

Paint was applied very neatly. Areas are distinct and differentiated. Very crisp, clean edges. No distracting brushstrokes. Colors were applied evenly.

Painting was neatly done with no unintentional marks left unfixed. Paint remains in individual shapes. Edges are neat and crisp.

Paint application is somewhat neat. Project has few stray marks and smudges. Some attempt made to keep individual colors in seperate areas.
Below average

Paint is sloppy with few distinct, crisp, edges. colors were not neatly painted.
Poor

Little or no attention given to paint application.
Professional Presentation

Artwork was beautifully and patiently done; it was as good as hard work could make it. No rips or folds. Circle carefully cut and finished edge is very neat.

With a little more effort, the work could have been outstanding; lacks the finishing craftsmanship and neatness.

Misuse of much of given class time. The student does not show willingness to complete assigned tasks. Student rushed project and placing very little time and effort on meeting requirements.
