Physical vs. Chemical Changes
While a physical property can be observed without altering the identity of a material, a chemical property cannot. Chemical properties are observed when substances are converted to different substances with different properties. Flammability, for example, is a chemical property that can only be observed when a substance reacts with oxygen. If a chemical change has occurred, the products will differ from the reactants. Although one must perform chemical analyses to show that a chemical reaction has taken place, there are certain easily observed changes that generally indicate a chemical reaction has occurred: (1) the production of heat or light; (2) the production of a gas when two or more substances are mixed; (3) the formation of a precipitate when two or more solutions are mixed; and (4) a change in color.

Performance

Poor

Scientist does not offer explanation for physical and chemical changes. He/she is lacking observations and may not have answered the post-lab questions. Little effort is shown.
Fair

Scientist did not complete observations but completed the data tables and post lab questions. Explanations for physical or chemical changes were offered in data table.
Good

Scientist completed all eight observations, identified and explained if the experiment was a physical or chemical change, and answered the two post-lab reflection questions. Effort was made to fill in the whole data table.
Citizenship and Conduct

Poor

Scientist detracts from the productivity of the group.
Fair

Scientist passively participates in the lab. He/she is neither helpful nor distracting.
Good

Scientist is supportive to classmates and actively helps to keep group on task.
