Number of Lines and Length	Needs Work Poem is 1-3 lines. Lines are the same length.	Incomplete Poem is 4-6 lines. Lines are mostly the same length.	Complete Poem is 7-9 lines. Lines are mostly different lengths.	Exceptional Poem has 10 or more lines. Lines are different lengths.
Descriptive language	Needs Work Poem uses two or less senses to create an image in the reader’s mind.	Incomplete Poem uses three senses to create an image in the reader’s mind.	Complete Poem uses four senses to create an image in the reader’s mind.	Exceptional Poem uses the five senses (taste, touch, sight, smell, and hearing) to create a stronger image in the reader’s mind.
Meaning and Originality	Needs Work Poem displays little thought as work is unoriginal and/or repetitive.	Incomplete Poem is basic and displays some creativity, but appears rushed. There are unnecessary or unrelated details.	Complete Poem is thoughtful and creative. A couple of phrases or ideas may be revisited, but the overall product is carefully written.
