Student can speak very sparsely. Frequent use of single-word utterances instead of sentences. Student struggles to understand topic discussed, questions asked by partner and struggles to create follow-up questions. Minimal amount of eye contact. Unwilling or unable to assist partner in continuing the conversation.

Student answers in short utterances with infrequent use of complete sentences. Some answers are memorized. Student can create occasional follow-up questions, though frequently limited to yes/no questions. Long pauses are common between and during conversation topics. Student is willing to make eye contact, though for less than 50% of the conversation.
Average
Student uses complete sentences frequently. Student is able to create at least one or two follow-up questions for each conversation topic. Questions asked might be yes/no or open-ended. Conversation is slightly hesitant but student makes effort to fill pauses by offering their own opinions and asking follow-up questions. Eye contact is maintained for more than 50% of the conversation.
Above Average
Student uses full sentences almost exclusively. Ideas presented are logical and student maintains focus on the topic discussed by offering their opinions and asking follow-up questions that are open-ended and a logical continuation of the topic discussed. Eye contact is maintained throughout the bulk of the conversation and student uses and understands non-verbal signals of interest and disinterest.
Grammar and Accuracy

Student has frequent errors in grammar that lead to gross difficulties in communication. There is insufficient communication between partners.

Grammar errors lead to occasional communicative difficulty. Student repeats errors without self-correcting.
Average
Student uses grammar concepts covered in class with minor errors that do not hinder communication. Occasional problems with word order, especially in instances with more complex concepts. Student can occasionally self-correct.
Above Average
Student shows understanding of class grammar concepts through frequent correct use. Communication errors do not stem from grammar issues. Frequent use or little need for self-correction.
Vocabulary and Expressions

Poor
Frequent misuse of words and expressions. Little to no command of terminology taught in class. Student maintains a very limited set of memorized words and terms.
Below Average
Student will frequently use words and expressions in the wrong situations. Little knowledge of classroom terms. Student uses a limited set of vocabulary and terminology.
Average
Occasional words or terms will be used incorrectly. Student demonstrates knowledge of some classroom terms in correct situations. Vocabulary and phrases used are somewhat varied and frequently on topic.
Above Average
Range of vocabulary demonstrates an understanding of classroom topics and terminology. Vocabulary and phrases are quite varied and used in correct situations.
Pronunciation and Intonation

Pronunciation makes communication quite difficult. Lack of intonation makes distinguishing sentences from questions difficult. Words are frequently unintelligible to the instructor.
Below Average
Pronunciation is passable and generally does not impede communication. Occasional words are unintelligible to the instructor. Student demonstrates some class-covered pronunciation.
Average
Pronunciation is generally clear with some words being difficult for partner to recognize. Few words are unintelligible to the instructor. Student demonstrates pronunciation used in class.
Above Average
Pronunciation is not an issue and words are understood during all portions of the assessment. Student demonstrates frequent use of pronunciation covered in class.
