Alphabet and Sounds	Exceeds Standards Recognizes all letters of the alphabet and their respective sounds. Can blend sounds to read new words.	Meets Standards Recognizes all letters of the alphabet and their respective sounds.	Below Standards Recognizes all letters of the alphabet, but knows some sounds.	Far Below Standards Recognizes some letters of the alphabet<BR> but does not know sounds.
Vowels and Consonant Sounds	Exceeds Standards Identifies both consonants and vowels, with their respective sounds.	Meets Standards Identifies both consonants and vowels, with their respective sounds.	Below Standards Identifies consonants but cannot identify vowels.	Far Below Standards Identifies alphabet but does not realize them as consonants or vowels.
Vowel Differentiation	Exceeds Standards Recognizes long and short vowel sounds. Can blend sounds to read new words.	Meets Standards Recognizes long and short vowel sounds. Can blend sounds to read familiar words.	Below Standards Recognizes long vowel sounds but not short sounds.	Far Below Standards Cannot differentiate between long and short vowels sounds.
