Instrumental Performance Rubric 
The students should demonstrate the following skills when performing: playing pitches, playing rhythms, breathing, sticking, style and expression and posture. The students will be assessed on 5 out of the 6 criteria for a total of 20 points possible per assessment. Ex. Percussion will not be assessed on breathing and breath control, but will be assessed on sticking position. Wind players will not be assessed on sticking, but they will be assessed on breathing and breath control.

Breathing

Breathing every 2-4 measures not in the middle of a phrase.

Posture

Both hands and all fingers in the correct position their wind instrument
Sitting on the edge of the chair with feet flat on the floor.
Percussion should use proper stick holding and standing position.

Does not exhibit any evidence of good posture.
Ineffective

Rarely uses correct hand/holding and seated/standing posture for the duration of the performance.
Developing

Sometimes uses correct hand/holding and seated/standing posture for the duration of the performance.
Proficient

Typically uses correct hand/holding and seated/standing posture for the duration of the performance.
Accomplished

Consistenly uses correct hand/holding and seated/standing posture for the duration of the performance.
Expression and Style

Items that are graded in this section will be tempo/steady beat (andante, moderato, allegro) and dynamics (forte, piano, mezzo forte, mezzo piano, crescendos, decrescendos, etc.)

Does not attempt to incorporate any expressive or stylistic qualities.
Ineffective

Rarely demonstrates expression and style. Just plays the notes.

Sometimes performs with a style indicated by the music, teacher or peer.

Frequently performs with a style indicated by the music with little to no coaching from teacher or peer.
Percussion Sticking/Fingerings

Use alternate sticking (RLRL or LRLR) and/or correct rudiments unless other sticking patterns are in your music.

Rarely uses consistent and correct sticking.

Sometimes performs sticking that is appropriate for the passages being played.

Typically performs sticking that is appropriate for the passages being played.
