Neatness	1 Entry is messy and hard to read.	2 Entry is neat and easy to read.	3 Entry is beautiful; handwriting is super neat and creative and graphic enhancements used.
Effort	1 Entry is too short and too rushed to explain ideas and thoughts about the book.	2 Entry is appropriate in length for the idea, connection or question being explained.	3 Entry length shows the student put extra effort and time into responding to the book.
Organization	1 Heading is missing.	2 Heading is incomplete.	3 Heading includes: name, date, book title and page number. Heading includes the type of response or connection being made.
Quote	1 Quote from book is missing in the response.	2 Parts of the quote are missing or not fully written out.	3 Entire qoute refered to is copied into response
Reading Response	1 Student starts writing about book as if reader already read the book. A connection is made, but student does not explain why he or she felt this way	2	3 Student clearly explains the part of the story being refered to. Student explains thought and feeling and uses reasons.
