Writer offers recognizable, but broad topic. Topic not focused on specific aspect. Topic around central theme or story line. Writer offers details, but some not always accurate or relevant. Key questions are not addressed.

Writer has not settled on a topic and offers unfocused, repetitious, or random thought. Topic is not narrowed. Simply has restated the assignment topic without using much thought or effort into it. Little attention to details and contains inaccurate information.

Grabs reader's attention from the start. Includes a variety of sequence and transition words. The piece is easy to follow by fitting details together logically. Writer sums up his/her thinking in a nature, thought, and convincing way.
