Posture/Technique

Mastery

Performer consistently demonstrates proper Left and right hand
postures. Body is relaxed and the instrument is placed at the appropriate level. Bow is used and placed effectively.
Proficient

Performer demonstrates proper left and right hand technique most of the time but lacks consistency. Bow is mostly used and placed effectively.
Developing

Posture in the left or right hand is developing but inconsistent. Student displays improper bowing technique at times but able to maintain the integrity fo the performance.
Basic

Posture is improper in one or both hands and significantly detracts from the overall performance. Bow is not placed properly, improper angle usage detracts from the overall performance.
Beginning

Student demonstrates poor undeveloped left and right hand posture. Student does not demonstrate basic ability to hold the instrument or bow correctly. Performance is strongly impacted.
Tone

Mastery

Tone is full and supported with excellent air/bow control. Sound demonstrates mature concepts of tone production. Vibrato used appropriately.
Proficient

Tone is full most of the time and supported with good air/bow control. Sound demonstrates an at-level concept of tone production.
Developing

Tone is full sometimes, but usually lacks the appropriate air support/bow control to create a full resonant sound.
Basic

Tone is rarely full, and lacks the appropriate air support/bow control. Sound is scratchy, shaky.
Beginning

Performer is unable to demonstrate fundamentals of producing a tone on the instrument.
Musicality

Mastery

Performance is expressive and exemplifies a proper grasp of nuance and style (Dynamics, phrasing, articulations)
Proficient

Performance is mostly expressive and exemplifies correct concepts of style with a few errors.
Developing

Performance lacks musical expression sometimes and is inconsistent.
Basic

Performance maintains very little musical expression.
Beginning

Performer is unable to demonstrate or execute proper dynamics, phrasing or articulation.
Intonation

Mastery

All pitches are in tune with minor adjustments made immediately. Pitches are read and played correctly.
Proficient

Mostly accurate intonation. Student is able to make a few adjustments. Pitches are mostly read and played correctly. A few errors are performed but does not detract from the overall performance.
Developing

Difficulty maintaining correct intonation. Attempts to correct are made but detract from the overall performance. Pitches are sometimes read and played correctly.
Basic

Unable to maintain correct pitch throughout the performance. Significant errors detract from the overall performance.
Beginning

Key is undetectable. Most notes are incorrect.
