Tower Design & Construction Project
Tower Design & Construction Project
Students will use the engineering design process to plan and develop a balsa wood tower. Students will create a architectural design proposal with annotated measurements of their tower. After receiving approval, students will use their designs to develop and construct their balsa wood tower. Once completed student tower will be put under a load to test their structural integrity.

Layout / Scale
Excellent
All drawings were drawn using an established scale. Views are laid out in a clear and understandable fashion and clearly labeled.
Good
Most drawings were drawn using an established scale. Views are not laid out in an understandable order but are clearly labeled.
Fair
Some drawings were drawn using an established scale. Views are not laid out in an understandable order and some are missing labels.
Poor
No established scale is used. Views are not laid out in an understandable order and are not labeled.
Accuracy / Annotations
Excellent
All tower segments are clearly and accurately annotated using proper engineering notation.
Notations match scaled distance.
Good
Most tower segments are accurately annotated using proper engineering notation.
Notations roughly match scaled distance.
Fair
Some tower segments are annotated using engineering notation.
Notations do not match scaled distance.
Poor
No annotations are used.
Neatness
Excellent
Finished output is neatly done with minimal smudges and eraser marks.
Lines are straight and easy to see.
Good
Output contains smudges and eraser marks but the design is still clearly readable.
Lines are mostly straight and easy to see.
Fair
Output contains many smudges and eraser marks that makes the design difficult to read.
Lines are somewhat straight and difficult to see.
Poor
Output is mostly smudged so that the design is nearly unreadable.
Lines are not straight and difficult to see.

Poor
Tower structure is not symmetrical at all.
Structural Connections
Excellent
Structural connections are precisely fitted and there is no excess glue.
Good
Many structural connections are precisely fitted and there is little excess glue.
Fair
Some structural connections are precisely fitted and there is some excess glue.
Poor
Few structural connections are precisely fitted and there is much excess glue.
Limits
Excellent
All measurements are within the constraints set by the architectural plans.
Good
Most measurements are within the constraints set by the architectural plans.
Fair
Some measurements are within the constraints set by the architectural plans.
Poor
Few measurements are within the constraints set by the architectural plans.
Structural Integrity
Excellent
Tower managed to withstand a heavy load before showing signs of failing.
Good
Tower managed to withstand a moderate load before showing signs of failing.
Fair
Tower managed to withstand a light load before showing signs of failing.
Poor
Tower did not manage to support a minimal load before failing.
