Organization	Exceeds standard Details are placed in a logical order and the way they are presented effectively keeps the interest of the reader.	Meets standard Details are placed in a logical order, but the way in which they are presented/introduced sometimes makes the writing less interesting or a bit confusing.	Partially meets standard Details are not in a logical or expected order, and this distracts the reader who is often confused.	Does not meet standard Many details are not in a logical or expected order. There is little sense that the writing is organized.
Methods of Characterization	Exceeds standard Well chosen significant details bring your character to life. The reader believes in your character and understands his or her motivations. You have included powerful elements of direct and indirect methods of characterization.	Meets standard You included some significant details in your writing; this gives the reader some sense of your character.	Partially meets standard You included few significant details in your writing; reader has a vague sense of your character.	Does not meet standard You included very few if any significant details in your writing; the reader has little understanding of your character.
Grammar and Mechanics	Exceeds standard The writer demonstrates a consistent ability to control a wide range of elements of effective writing, but it is not necessarily flawless.	Meets standard The writer maintains reasonable control of a wide range of standard conventions in a piece that may contain lapses in punctuation, diction, or syntax, but generally the writing is clear.	Partially meets standard The writer generally conveys his or her ideas, but may be less consistent than a '3' in controlling punctuation, diction, and syntax.
