USC's LIVE: Library Instruction Videotape Evaluation tool 
This rubric can be used to self-assess a videotaped Information Literacy session using the following ten measures: preparation, introduction, questions, clarity, summarization, active learning, presentation, content, communication, and classroom management. For each of the 10 elements, circle a description that applies best to the videotaped class you are reviewing. Add up the points and use the key below to assess the class: Excellent class=64-80pts Good class=40-64pts, Fair class=16-40, Minimal class (needs improvement)=16-0 pts.

This measures the level of preparation of the instructor.

Minimal

The instructor starts the class on time.
Fair

In addition to starting the class on time, there is some evidence the instructor has communicated with the professor prior to the session.
Good

In addition to starting the class on time, there is some evidence the instructor has communicated with the professor prior to the session, tried to obtain subject matter or research assignments. Also, the instructor prepares handouts or other specialized tools.
Excellent

In addition to starting the class on time, there is evidence of communication and negotiation between the professor and the librarian about the content and scope of the class. There is evidence the instructor has previously reviewed any relevant material for teaching, and has the research assignment or student topics beforehand. Prepared handouts or other specialized materials are ready to distribute to students as they walk in.
Introduction

This measures how well the instructor communicates the structure of the class, creates a welcoming environment and responds accordingly.

Minimal

The instructor begins the lecture without an introduction or an overview of the session.
Fair

Before the lecture begins, the instructor provides a minimal introduction outlining the purpose of the session or the sequence of events.
Good

The instructor introduces themself to the class and provides a brief overview of the outline. However, during the scope of the introduction they do not allow for students questions or clarification of lecture content.
Excellent

The instructor welcomes students and faculty as they enter into the room. The instructor introduces themself, provides immediate contact information, and outlines the purpose of the class, and gives a lenghty explanation of the outline of the class. The instructor uses some ice-breaking technqiues during the beginning of class. In addition, the instructor allows students to share any immediate thoughts, concerns or questions so they can be addressed during lecture.
Questions

The instructor allows little time for questions.
Fair

The instructor not only allows plenty of time for questions, but encourages the students to ask questions.
Good

The instructor not only allows plenty of time for questions, but encourages the students to ask questions. The instructor always responds in a positive or encouraging way to student questions.
Excellent

The instructor not only allows plenty of time for questions, but encourages the students to ask questions. The instructor always responds in a positive or encouraging way to student questions. The instructor is able to refocus the content or order of the lecture to help address the questions that are asked. If the questions being asked are unique to a particular student, the instructor will make sure they answer the question after class.
Summary

The instructor lectures, asks questions, and uses audio visual aids in teaching. In addition they create at atmosphere that encourages class discussions about the material presented.
Good

The instructor lectures, asks questions, uses audio visual aids in teaching, creates class discussions, and incorporates short written exercises (e.g.-1 minute papers, research worksheets) to review material.
Excellent

The instructor moves past passive learning to active learning, to find better ways of engaging students in the learning process. The instructor provides a full array of active learning activites beyond lecture, such as continous questioning, facilitating class discussions, presenting short written exercises, think-pair-share or brainstorming activites.
Communication

The instructors voice is clear and audible.
Fair

The instructors voice is clear and audible, speaking at a moderate pace with breaths for pauses.
Good

The instructors voice is clear and audible, speaking at a moderate pace with breaths for pauses and good inflection on keywords and concepts.

The instructors voice is clear and audible, speaking at a moderate pace with breaths for pauses and good inflection. The instructor does not fill the lecture with stammer or filler words (eg-"like", "you know")

The instructor provides an organized lecture.

The instructor provides an organized lecture that is well researched and contains relevant examples.
Good

The instructor provides an organized lecture, well researched, with relevant examples and makes connections & transitions between lecture content.
Excellent

The instructor provides a well organized class that builds a logical progression from smaller concepts to larger concepts. The presentation is well researched and contains relevant examples and an appropriate selection of library materials. The instructor revises or adds additional portions of lecture based on student questions and feedback.
Presentation

This measures the non verbal communication skills of the instructor.

Minimal

The instructor makes minimal eye contact with students and reads from note cards or the computer screen.
Fair

The instructor makes sustained eye contact with students and avoids distracting body language and facial expression such as distracting hand movements, pacing, or grimacing.
Good

The instructor makes eye contact with students throughout the lecture and avoids distracting body language and facial expressions. The instructor does not stand directly in front of slides, charts, graphs, or the computer projector.
Excellent

The instructor makes eye contact with students throughout the lecture and avoids distracting body language and facial expressions. The instructor does not block the view of visual material and uses a laser or other tool to highlight visual content. The instructor responds to student's non-verbal ques and corrects problems with body language during the presentation.
