The curriculum has direct explicit connections to appropriate grade level and to content standards (national, state,and/or local). Builds connections outside of school and emanates from a question, problem, issue or exploration that is significant to the disciplines. Students have significant input in determining the scope of the study.

The curriculum has some connections to appropriate grade level and to content standards (national, state, and/or local). Students' interests and concerns influence the scope of the inquiry study.

It is unclear whether the curriculum is grade appropriate and/or explicitly connected to the standards. The scope of the inquiry is determined mainly by the mandated curriculum.

It is clear that the curriculum is nit age appropriate and/or tied to the standards.

Multiple opportunities and on-going assessment is included in the design of the study providing timely, descriptive feedback. Utilizes a range of methods. Assessments guide teacher's instructional planning.

Limited opportunities for assessment at specific points of instruction. Assessment is used in a limited way to guide instructional planning.
