Posture/Breathing	Unacceptable Student makes no effort to sit/stand in balance and breathing is affected.	Progressing Student understands concepts of balanced breathing but is inconsistent in applying it.	Approaching Mastery Student demonstrates balanced posture and breathing but excess tension inhibits free movement.	Mastery Student is effective in the use of his/her body and posture and breathing are correct and efficient.
Articulation/Tonguing	Unacceptable Difficulty with tonguing and slurring patterns and/or accents.	Progressing Student usually follows the articulation marked but there are frequent or repeated small errors.	Approaching Mastery Almost all articulation patterns are correct and/or consistent.	Mastery All articulation patterns are performed correctly.
Pitch Accuracy	Unacceptable The tune is unrecognizable due to pitch mistakes.	Progressing The student shows understanding of the tune but mistakes detract from meaningful performance.	Approaching Mastery Note mistakes are noticeable but infrequent enough to still communicate melody.	Mastery Melody is recognizable and meaningful, and any mistakes made do not take away from performance.
Tone Quality	Unacceptable Tone quality is unsupported and feeble and student shows no signs of working to improve.	Progressing Tone quality is weak or not characteristic of the instrument, but student is making efforts to improve.	Approaching Mastery Considerable use of projection and fullness of tone but still somewhat short of a mature sound.	Mastery Tone is full and effective, and student is able to make decisions about tone in musical interpretation.
Accurate Rhythm	Unacceptable Pulse is unstable with major rhythmic errors.	Progressing Pulse is fairly steady but there are frequent or repeated small rhythmic errors.	Approaching Mastery Steady pulse with few rhythmic errors.	Mastery Pulse is steady and consistent, and rhythms are accurate.
Interpretation	Unacceptable Rarely uses dynamics and/or follows indications of tempo or style.	Progressing Use of dynamics is narrow and/or playing is inconsistent in tempo or style.	Approaching Mastery Student displays ability to play with correct dynamics, phrasing & tempo with only minor errors.	Mastery Student consistently plays with appropriate dynamics, phrasing & tempo. Student displays a sense of musical creativity and sensibility.
