Narrative Prompt and 5 traits 
Think about a time when something special or unusual happened at school. It could be a time when something unexpected happened in your classroom. Or it could be any event at school that you remember well. Write about what happened and why it was special or unusual. Narrative story should use the 5 traits of writing ( voice, ideas, organization, word choice & sentence fluency) and clearly answer the prompt.

Organization

Beginning

Events are unorganized. Some areas of the story jump around and are not in order.
Meeting

Events are in a logical order. (First, next, then, last). The reader is able to follow the story with ease.
Exceeding

Events are in a logical order. The writer uses transition words and paragraph structure to organize their writing.
Word Choice

Beginning

Uses 2 or less strong verbs (action words)

ex: stomping, stretched, shoved, repeated, whispered, peeked, slipped, glistened. (or other strong verbs)
Meeting

Uses 3- 4 strong verbs ( action words)

ex: stomping, stretched, shoved, repeated, whispered, peeked, slipped, glistened. (or other strong verbs)
Exceeding

Uses 5 or more strong verbs (action words)

ex: stomping, stretched, shoved, repeated, whispered, peeked, slipped, glistened. (or other strong verbs)
Voice

Beginning

Reader is unable to clearly identify the voice of the story.
Meeting

Reader is able to identify the voice of the story. (happy, sad, cheerful, frightful, suspenseful etc.)
Exceeding

Reader is able to identify the voice of the story and pick out areas where the writer made the voice clear. (ex: words, phrases, punctuation)
Sentence Fluency

Beginning

All sentences are similar lengths.
Meeting

Sentences vary. Writer uses different sentence lengths and beginnings.
Exceeding

Writer uses different sentence length, sentences flow, uses different beginning and uses transition words.
