Four Mallet Technique
	Meets Expectations 4 pts	Near Expectations 3 pts	Below Expectations 2 pts	Needs Improvement 1 pts
Hand Position Standing with thumbs facing up, Correct construction of Stevens grip.	Meets Expectations Playing position is correct and hand & finger position are correct to allow for good technical facility.	Near Expectations Hand and finger position are good but the grip is too tight or loose for good stick/mallet control. Rolls may be uneven	Below Expectations Playing position is good but there are minor errors in hand or finger position.	Needs Improvement Some effort is being made to hold the mallets correctly but performance is hindered because finger position is incorrect or mallets are not held at the balance point.
Playing motion Mallets start above the instrument allowing for a full down-up stroke. Minimal arm motion.	Meets Expectations The playing motion is correct, allowing for good control of the mallets and good sound from the instrument.	Near Expectations There are some faults in the pattern or direction of the mallet motion. (Starting out with an upward rather than a downward motion or poor control of where the stick strikes.)	Below Expectations The playing motion is generally correct with only minor errors.	Needs Improvement Mallets are too close to the playing surface or remain on the playing surface too long, resulting in a poor quality sound.
Accurate Rhythm Rhythms are accurately counted with a steady beat.	Meets Expectations Steady pulse with accurate rhythms	Near Expectations Pulse is fairly steady but there are frequent or repeated small rhythmic errors.	Below Expectations Steady pulse with few rhythmic errors	Needs Improvement Pulse is unstable with major rhythmic errors.
Accents and Dynamics Accents and dynamic markings are performed where indicated	Meets Expectations The student demonstrates consistent use of accents and dynamic markings	Near Expectations The student demonstrates most an understanding of the use of accents and dynamic markings with some faults.	Below Expectations The student demonstrates inconsistent use or performance of accents and dynamic markings with some attempts to correct mistakes.	Needs Improvement The student demonstrates little understanding of how to perform accents and dynamic markings
Sticking Correct sticking is used for each passage or exercise as indicated.	Meets Expectations Students demonstrates consistently the use of natural or alternate sticking where indicated	Near Expectations Students demonstrates control of most of the natural or alternate sticking where indicated.
