	Weak/Needs Improvement 5 pts	Fair/Average 9 pts	Good/Above Average 12 pts	Excellent 15 pts
Preparation/Memorization	Weak/Needs Improvement Student is obviously unprepared for the task. Little to no evidence of any rehearsals. The student has not memorized the poem.	Fair/Average Student is not well prepared and would benefit from many more rehearsals. The student has memorized entire poem and is able to present, however makes three+ errors and doesn't recover.	Good/Above Average Student is well prepared but the presentation of the poem requires a few more rehearsals. Needed a few more practices. The student has memorized entire poem and is able to present with just one error from which h/she recovers.	Excellent Student is well prepared and it is obvious that she/he rehearsed her/his poem thoroughly. The student has memorized the entire poem and is able to present it without error.
Physical Presence	Weak/Needs Improvement The student slouches, looks uncomfortable and/or makes no effective contact with the audience at all. Tension and nervousness is obvious and awkward/distracting.	Fair/Average Student is timid or unsure of poem and/or his/herself; body language and eye contact reflects nervousness.	Good/Above Average Student employs proper posture and gestures, is relaxed and confident, and maintains appropriate audience contact most of the time or is lacking in one of these elements.	Excellent Student employs proper posture and gestures, is relaxed and confident, and maintains appropriate audience eye contact.
Voice and Articulation	Weak/Needs Improvement Student is inaudible; slow; distracting rhythm; singsong; hurried; mispronunciations.	Fair/Average Student is audible but too quiet, too loud, monotone, paced unevenly, etc.	Good/Above Average Student voice is clear, crisp, and effective, but is not quite compelling enough to captivate audience or is lacking in some way.	Excellent Student's voice/articulation is crisp and clear; mastery of rhythm and pace; skillful use of volume and intonation.
Dramatic Appropriateness	Weak/Needs Improvement Poem is overshadowed by significantly distracting gestures, facial expressions, accents, acting out of poem, over-emoting, or inappropriate tone (attitude).	Fair/Average Poem is neither overwhelmed nor enhanced by style of delivery.	Good/Above Average Poem is enhanced by style of delivery; any gestures, facial expressions, and movements are appropriate to the poem.	Excellent Style of delivery reflects internalization of poem (students feels the words he/she speaks); all gestures and movements feel vital for the poem's success.
