Plant Growth Compare & Contrast

Students will measure, record, graph, draw & write about the growth of 2 plants. One plant will receive all 4 items necessary for growth. One plant will be missing an item necessary for growth.

Plant Growth Compare & Contrast Students will compare and contrast the growth of two plants.
	Poor 1 pts	Fair 2 pts	Good 3 pts
Measure & Record 1. Plant with all 4 growth needs 2. Plant with only 3 growth needs 3. Students record growth on their graphic organizer in their science journal.	Poor Student did not measure or record the measurement in their graphic organizer.	Fair Student measures both plants in another form of measurement (inches, feet, etc.) and records the measurements on the graphic organizer in their science journals.	Good Student accurately measures both plants in centimeters and records the measurements on the graphic organizer in their science journals.
Graph Student uses excel to create a graph a graph with 4 weeks of plant measurements for both plants.	Poor Student did not create a graph.	Fair Student creates a graph with accurate measurements, but do not have the title, x & y axis. The graph will include 4 weeks of measurements.	Good Student will create a graph that include a title, labels for the x axis & the y axis, and accurate measurements for both of their plants. The graph will include 4 weeks of measurements.
Draw The students will draw a picture weekly of their plant & label the parts of the plant.	Poor The students draw 8 pictures but do not label the plants.	Fair The students draw 8 pictures of their plants and label the plants, but the labels are inaccurate.	Good The students will draw a picture of their plants for 4 weeks (total of 8 drawings). The students will label the plant parts of each drawing: stem, leaves, fruit, roots, flower, seeds, but only the parts of a plant that are present when drawing, so it is accurate compared to their own plants.
Compare & Contrast Paragraph 1. Write 1 paragraph (4-5 complete sentences) comparing both plants. 2. Write 1 paragraph contrasting both plants (containing 4-5 sentences.	Poor The student writes 2-4 sentences comparing and contrasting their two plants. The sentences contain 5 or more spelling and or grammatical errors.	Fair The student writes 2 paragraphs that compare and contrast their two plants. The paragraphs have 1 incomplete or run on sentence. The writing sample contains 3-4 spelling and or grammatical errors.	Good Student writes 2 paragraphs that compare and contrast their two plants. Both paragraphs contain complete sentences. The writing sample contains 2 or fewer spelling and or grammatical errors.
