Solving Math Word Problems

This rubric will assess a student's ability to write an original math word problem for a partner to solve and solve a problem given to them by their partner. Students are also assessed on their ability to explain in writing their strategy used to solve the problem.

Problem Creation	Expert Student can write a multi-step fraction math story problem on their own with correctly written fractions.	Practitioner Student can write a simple fraction math story problem with some help, using simple fractions.	Apprentice Student did not write an accurate fraction math story problem without help.
Language	Expert Student can clearly write their problem with little or no spelling, capitals or punctuation problems.	Practitioner Student can clearly write their problem with little spelling, capitals or punctuation problems.	Apprentice Student cannot clearly write their problem and makes several errors with spelling, capitals or punctuation problems.
Solving Your Problem	Expert Student is able to solve their own math problem accurately with no help; shows work and visuals with logical reasoning.	Practitioner Student is able to solve their own math problem accurately with little help; shows misconception in work.	Apprentice Student is not able to solve their own math problem accurately without help.
Solving Your Partner's Problem	Expert Student is able to solve their partner's math problem accurately with no help	Practitioner Student is able to solve their partner's math problem accurately with little help	Apprentice Student is not able to solve their partner's math problem accurately without help
Explaining Strategy	Expert Student is able to explain in writing how they solved their partner's problem with no help and give their partner feed back about their word problem.
