Students will evaluate at least websites during the research process to see if they meet the criteria for being credible and reliable.

Critical Website Evaluation The first step of research is locating the very best information available.
	Poor Worst choice for research. The information has a high chance of being inaccurate or/and or biased. 1 pts	Good A website that meets the majority of these criteria is not your best choice. 2 pts	Excellent A quality website or database should meet these criteria. 3 pts
Credibility What makes the author or sponsor an expert on the topic?	Poor Url is a .com No author/sponsor identified. No contact information present.	Good Url is a .com Author/sponsor is identified, but verifying information was not present, or information provided does not make them an authority. Contact information maybe or may not be present.	Excellent URL is a .edu, .gov, .org, or a database. Author/sponsor clearly identified. The author or institution is a qualified authority--verifying information was present. Contact information is present.
Accuracy Does the site provide a thorough and balanced approach to the topic, and provide statistics or citations to back up it's claims?	Poor Site provides only general information. Both sides of the issue are not presented. Little to no sources, statistics, and/or citations provided.	Good Site is fairly thorough in its providing information on the issue. Site is not as balanced in it's approach to the issue. Apparent that the author has a specific view point. Some sources, citations, and/or statistic provided.	Excellent Site provides a comprehensive look at the issue at hand. Site provides statics, sources, and/or citations. Both sides are of the issue are presented in a balanced manner. A specific perspective/opinion on the issue is not apparent.
Reliability Is this the most current information available?	Poor No dates can be found. Information is dated.	Good Copyright and/or last update is not current. Information seems dated.	Excellent Copyright is present. Last update is current. Information is up-to-date.
Purpose What's the point of the site?	Poor Purpose is ambiguous and/or information is irrelevant. Site is loaded with advertising. The site is obviously a parody.	Good Information does not align with purpose. Information presented is questionable. Appears to be a parody or spoof. Some advertising.	Excellent The purpose/audience for the website is clear and information is aligned to that group. The site provides factual information. No or very little advertising.
Functionality Is the website easy to navigate, fully operational, and professionally done?	Poor Lacked good links Navigating the site is confusing, poorly set up. Difficult to find desired information. URL not memorable.	Good Some links may be broken. Navigating through the site requires effort. URL is short and to the point.	Excellent Links to other websites work. Superior navigation through the site. Information is well organized, easy to find. Memorable URL.
