If a reason for choosing the experience is given, it does not address cultural blindspots or biases (e.g., "I chose this activity because it sounded interesting and I wanted to learn more about X.")

Reason given acknowledges a bias or blindspot, but not in any depth (e.g., "I chose this activity because I'm aware that I feel uncomfortable around group X.")

Reason given explores bias or blindspot (e.g., discusses awareness of source of personal bias, discusses level of discomfort)

Shows minimal awareness of personal reactions, focusing solely on intellectualized reactions.

Identifies personal reactions, but demonstrates little exploration or understanding of these reactions; avoids discomfort and uncertainty.

Deeply explores personal reactions, including exploration of the basis for these reactions (e.g., articulates insights into own cultural rules and biases); willingness to sit with uncertainty and not seek easy answers.

Does not discuss or focuses on viewing the experience of others through own cultural worldview; has difficulty suspending any judgment in her/his interactions with culturally different others, and is minimally aware of own judgment.

Identifies components of other cultural perspectives / experiences; is aware of own judgment and expresses a willingness to change.

Interprets intercultural experience from the perspectives of own and more than one worldview; suspends judgment in valuing her/his interactions with culturally different others.

Absent or cursory reference to implication of experience for clinical work.

Acknowledges implications of experience for clinical work.

Explores implications of experience for clinical work.
