Opening Paragraph

Excellent

Identifies who you are, the position for which you are applying, how you heard about the opening, and explains why you are interested in the job. The wording is creative and catches an employer's attention quickly.
Satisfactory

Identifies who you are, the position you are seeking, and how you heard about the job, but may be vague in areas and/or lacks information about why you are interested in the job. The section is factual, but not very catchy.
Adequate

May not clearly identify who you are, what position you are seeking, how you heard about the position, or why you are interested. This section may be bland and not written to catch the attention to keep an employer reading.
Unsatisfactory

Missing major components of the opening paragraph.
Middle Paragraph

Excellent

Identifies one or two of your strongest qualifications and clearly relates how these skills apply to the job at hand. It explains specifically why you are interested in the position, the type of job, company, and/or location in an intriguing manner.
Satisfactory

Identifies one of your qualifications, but it may not be directly related to the position at hand. Your resume is simply restated in a minimal/factual way. You may explain why you are interested in the position, but are too vague to be intriguing.
Adequate

May identify qualification, but no attempt to connect them to the position at hand has been made. Your skills are not related to the position for which you are applying, and it is not stated why you are interested in the position, company, or location directly.
Unsatisfactory

Lacking components necessary to this portion of the cover letter.
Closing Paragraph

Excellent

References the reader to your resume or any other enclosed documents. The letter thanks the reader for taking time to read the letter. The closing is assertive in describing how you are right for the position and will follow up with the employer.
Satisfactory

May not reference the reader to your resume or application materials. The reader is thanked for taking time to read the letter, but assumes that the employer will contact you to follow up.
Adequate
