1 rubric Convicts in a Female Factory - History Inquiry Learning       popup preview
This study involves a detailed investigation of the remains of the female factory at Ross, Tasmania. Students ‘become’ archaeologists and find a variety of objects relating to convict life. They draw on a variety of sources of evidence to help them ‘interrogate’ and interpret each object, to discover what it tells us about convict life/conditions. This involves students in hypothesising, gathering evidence, analysing, then extrapolating from a particular set of findings to a much larger picture.

6 rubric Frontier Conflict - History Inquiry Learning       popup preview
Students investigate the meanings behind a memorial to some explorers, killed by Aboriginal people. The facts of the clash are not in dispute; students deal with the meaning of the same event to different people with different values and points of view. Students experience how history ‘hears’ and ‘silences’ voices, and how people use the past in the present. They are also asked to confront the implications of the question whether modern Australia was created by ‘invasion’ or ‘settlement’.
