Floral Monuments in Abstraction

Georgia O’Keefe was an artist who devoted her time to developing a unique and creative style that would later inspire a new generation of artists, more specifically, female artists. O’Keeffe used many art devises such as Notan, cropping, color, abstraction, and shape just to name a few to create works of art that expressed her artistic perspective of the world around her; transformation of nature into abstraction. She has become one of the United States most loved and recognized female painters that some would considered her to be the mother of twentieth century modern art.

"Q: Has your use of isolated, blown-up details been influenced by photography?
O'Keeffe: I'll tell you how I happened to make the blown-up flowers. In the twenties, huge buildings sometimes seemed to be going up overnight in New York. At that time I saw a painting by Fantin-Latour, a still-life with flowers I found very beautiful, but I realized that were I to paint the same flowers so small, no one would look at them because I was unknown. So I thought I'll make them big like the huge buildings going up. People will be startled; they'll have to look at them -- and they did."
