Applied Theories

Activity that Allowed Me to Apply Theories or Concepts to a Practical Problem

Nursing theories are a large part of the course, End-of-Life Care.  In this class we learn theories related to death and dying and how to care for this very specific type of patient.  It explores meanings and thoughts behind death and ways to approach these sensitive issues.  A wonderful example is the Sunrise Model by Dr. Madeline Leininger which is a theory on culturally congruent care.  It demonstrates how various things effect a persons culture and by taking these into consideration a nurse can provide better care for their patient.

The United States is still considered a melting pot of nationalities, cultures, and religions.  Providing healthcare in this country requires healthcare providers to honor each individuals beliefs and wishes.  As a nurse we must be understanding of viewpoints that differ from our own.  Just as we want our wishes respected we must do the same for others.  This principle is one I apply in the care I give to my patients.
