Leadership Reflection

In partial fulfillment of the requirement for

July 21, 2007
Introduction
The past eight weeks I have been enrolled in a leadership in healthcare course. This course
taught us about leadership concepts and theories of leadership. It also taught us about moral roots
and effectiveness in the role of leadership. We also had to complete a leadership service learning
practicum. At the beginning of this class I wondered why we had to take this particular class and
how it applied to our job and us as students. I understand now why this class is important because
it has helped me really look at who I am as a person and how it has shaped my morals, I was able
to apply these objectives to my practicum and now I have become a better person at the end of
this class.
My Reflection
In the past I have never really been a leader. I guess people would have called me a follower.
Not in all cases but for the most part, I would just agree with the group and if it sounds good to me
I would never really say anything. The past year or two I have become more of a leader. I am
morevocal when it comes to projects and group work. I want to do my part and pull my weight.
This class has really made me look at who I am and who I want to be. It is very hard to write
about yourself because you may live your life that way but if you have never said it or wrote it
down that would make it more personals. In the middle of this class we had to start working on
our practicum. Our practicum was on heart disease for women. This project was very important
to me because I am a woman and I believe that women should really take pride in their health.
I really enjoyed doing this project it showed me that I can help educate the community and help
them understand a topic that should be very important to everyone. During our project we visited
MUSC to gather information on our topic, we also visited the Go Red for Women: Love your heart
website though American Heart Association. We had a little bit of a problem finding a place to
present. Our first place was going to be the Hope Lodge for Cancer patients here in Charleston, SC.
The Hope Lodge calendar for July was already booked when we talked to them. Our second choice
was a womens church group. When we went around to ask for permission most of the church
groups were out for the summer. So we decided that the information needed to be given to the
community. We planned our program for an apartment complex. We received permission from
the Cypress Cove office to use their clubhouse to presentour project. We also had our flyer
approved by the office before we placed them on the resident's doors and breezeways. Our
program was a big success we held it on Tuesday, July the 17
th
at 6-6:30pm.This is an example
of the flyer that was posted on the doors.

We had a lot of handouts and booklets to give to our guests. We also made red dress refrigerator
magnets to handout to them. That way everyday they will be reminded to love their heart. Here is
an example of the magnets that we handed out at our program.
This project has taught me a lot about being a leader. I have learned about organization,
delegations, compromising, thinking quickly on my feet are all the qualities that is needed
in a leader.
Summary
I feel that I am a better person after taking this class. I have learned many things
about who I am and how to apply these objectives to becoming a leader. The practicum has
taught me that we can help the community be more aware of their health. Taking time to do
research and committing to a project we can do anything. I am very blessed to have
experience this project and this program has taught me that I can make a difference.
