Basketball Skills Assessment 
Students will use this rubric to do a self assessment in the five categories listed. Their total score will reflect the type of basketball player they are currently.

Dribbling

NBA Status

1.Student can dribble the basketball with excellent control, proper positioning, and with either hand.
2.Student dribbles with head up, finger pads, knees bent.
3. Student can dribble with control and speed most of the time.
4. Student is able to change direction while dribbling, without losing control of the ball.
College Level

1.Student can dribble the basketball with good control and proper positioning with dominate hand only.
2. Student dribbles with head up,finger pads, knees bent
3. Student can dribble with control and speed some of the time.
4. Student is able to change direction while dribbling, but sometimes loses control of the ball.
High School Varsity

1.Student can dribble the basketball while moving but does not have good control
2. Has trouble keeping head up while dribbling
3. Student doesn't dribble with finger pads or lacks proper techniques while dribbling.
Junior Varsity

1.Student cannot dribble the basketball with control while moving
2. Sometimes dribbles with palm of hand, watches the ball or use improper techniques while dribbling.
Rercreational Player

1.Student cannot dribble the basketball with control while moving or stationary.
2. Often dribbles with palm of hand, watches the ball or uses improper techniques while dribbling.
Shooting

NBA Status

1. Student squares shoulders to the basket before shooting the ball.
2.Student demonstrates proper technique majority of the time
3. Demonstrates excellent accuracy when shooting, long range and close range shots.
4. Student can use a variety of shots during game play using correct form and with success most of the time.
College Level

1.Student squares shoulders to the basket before shooting the ball.
2. Student demonstrates proper technique
some of the time.
3.Demonstrates good accuracy when shooting, long range OR close range shots.
4. Student can use a few shots during game play, using correct form and with success some of the time.
High School Varsity

1.Student doesn't always square shoulders to the basket before shooting the ball.
2. Student uses two hands instead of one to shoot.
3. Demonstrates some accuracy when shooting, long range OR close range shots but with noticeable mechanical errors.
4. Student can use a few shots during game play but with errors in form, and with limited success.
Junior Varsity

1.Student attempts to shoot ball with one shoulder towards the basket
2.Student uses two hands to shoot.
3. Students attempts a few shots during game play but with little success.
4. Student has trouble shooting the ball successfully.
Rercreational Player

1.Student has trouble shooting the ball correctly.
2.Student has major errors in shooting techniques.
3. Students does not attempt any shots during game play.
Passing

NBA Status

1.Student can pass the ball with accuracy most of the time.
2.Student can pass the ball so that their teammate can receive it with ease.
3. Student can use a variety of passes during game play with success most of the time.
College Level

1. Student can pass the ball with accuracy some of the time
2. Student can usually pass the ball so that their teammate can receive it with ease.
3. Student can use a variety of passes during game play with success some of the time.
High School Varsity

1. Student can pass the ball with accuracy some of the time
2. Student can usually pass the ball so that their teammate can receive it with team mate making some adjustment.
3. Student can use a few passes during game play with success some of the time.
Junior Varsity

1.Student has trouble getting the pass to teammates
2.Student does not make sure the pass recipient is ready for the ball.
3.Student has trouble passing the ball successfully during game play.
Rercreational Player

1.Student has trouble getting the pass to teammates
2.Student does not attempt to pass or make sure the pass recipient is ready for the ball.
3.Student does not attempt to pass the ball during game play.
Knowledge & Application of Rules

NBA Status

1.Knows the rules and follows them.
2. Understands the rules and consistantly applies them during game play.
3. Student references posted rules located around the gym
College Level

1.Knows the rules and usually follows them.
2. Understands the rules and sometimes applies them during game play.
3. Student sometimes references posted rules located around the gym
High School Varsity

1.Knows some of the rules and occasionally follows them.
2. Understands some of the rules and sometimes applies them during game play.
3. Student may reference posted rules located around the gym if directed.
Junior Varsity

1.Knowledge of the rules are limited, but will follow them when told.
2. Understands a few rules but doesn't apply them during game play.
3. Student doesn't reference posted rules located around the gym.
Rercreational Player

1.Student isn't knowledgeable of the rules but will follow them when told.
2. Student is not able to apply them during game play.
3. Student doesn't reference posted rules located around the gym, even when told to do so
Sportsmanship\Teamwork

NBA Status

1.Knows the rules and follows them even if it means going against own team.
2.Clearly takes on a leadership role for the team.
3. Often helps teammates and interacts well with the other team
College Level

1.Knows the rules and follows them but won't go against own team.
2.Sometimes takes on a leadership role.
3. Sometimes helps teammates and interacts well with the other team
High School Varsity

1.Has some knowledge of the rules but doesn't always follow them
2.Doesn't take on a leadership role.
3. Occassionaly helps teammates and sometimes interacts well with the other team
Junior Varsity

1.Has some knowledge of the rules but chooses not to follow them.
2.Discourages others from trying to play and displays negative attitude about game.
3.Acts selfishly at times; dribbles by teammates instead of passing the ball, takes ridiculous shots, argues obvious calls etc.
Rercreational Player

1.Argues with other team, doesnot seem interested in team play
2. Acts selfishly at times, ignores the rules and doesn't acknowledge or honor obvious calls etc.
